The Divinity And Humanity Of Christ

Wednesday, October 30, 2002 • Rev. Jose Gomez Sr. • Bible
Wednesday Bible Study

Divinity means God head, the study of qualities that can only belong to God.

Christ means anointed one. It's the equivalent of Messiah in the Hebrew.

The Humanity Of Christ means that Christ came in the flesh and lived as a man.

The Bible says that; "every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God".

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We undertake this study with much reverence and care as not to diminish the fact that even though Christ took the form of a servant and of man, made of flesh like everyone of us. He was and still is God.

(Philipians 2: 5-8) declares; "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus; Who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God. But made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men. And being found in fashion as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient unto death, even the death on the cross".

#1) We see both the divinity and the humanity of Christ in the temptation in the wilderness, (Luke 4: 1-13).

A. The very first thing that we see here is that Jesus was tempted as we are sometimes.

Hebrews 2:14-18 declares;" as the children themselves are partakers of flesh and blood, He also took part of the same; that through death He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is the devil. And deliver those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage. For verily HE took not on Him the nature of angels; but He took on Him the seed of Abraham.

Wherefore in all things it behoved Him to be made like unto His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the sins of the people. For that He Himself hath suffered being tempted, He is able to succor them that are tempted".

Hebrews 4:15 declares; "For we have not a high priest that cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin".

#2) v.2, He ate food like we do and after fasting for forty days He was hungry.

#3) v.3, The devil challenged Christ's divinity. (Also in verse #9).

#4) v.4, Shows His humanity. Showing what man needs for survival. Not only physical food. but also the Spiritual which is the word of God.

#5) vv.4-13 shows His humanity.

A. We all go through these same temptations. In verse #3 He tempted Jesus with something that is natural to man which is food (lust of the flesh).

B. In verse six and seven he tempted Jesus by promising Him power and glory and all the kingdoms of the world. (The lust of the eyes).

C. In verses nine to eleven he tempted Jesus to show off that He was indeed the Son of God (pride of life) .

#6) He had the common experiences of humanity.

1. He was born to this world the same way that we are, Luke 1:31, 2:7.

2. He had a natural and physical growth, Luke 2:40

3. Had human feelings, Matt. 26:37.

4. Hunger

5. Sleep, Luke 8:23.

6. Had a physical body, Luke 24:39

7. Got tired, John 4:6.
